The COVID-19 pandemic became a worldwide concern in the year 2020. In December 2019, in Wuhan, China reported the first case. Since then, the disease has been tormenting humanity with effects throughout all aspects of life. The education system is one such aspect that took a significant hit.
Finally, school life, as we knew it, came to an end. Schools got shut down. Exams got canceled. The school closures are a means of reducing the transmission of the disease and cannot be avoided. So, students around the world had to adapt to this new way of schooling, online education. As if the pandemic has not put enough stress on them, the necessity to adjust has added more to it.
Schools had to find ways to make it work during the pandemic. Even when the schools were able to arrange for online classes, some students lacked the infrastructure to attend classes online. This year has indeed been a rollercoaster ride for the students of South Africa.
The top matric achievers around the country mentioned that 2020 was indeed a stressful year. One student, Aliya Swart, noted that the changes in schools and the uncertainty around exams were the most challenging part to handle. She then went on to mention that everyone had to learn how to handle this and that all students are in this together.
Ethan Poole, another matriculant, mentioned that working with his peers helped him during this pandemic. He said that teamwork helped ease the difficulties put forward by the pandemic.
Roy Stevens, a matriculant who scored 100% in mathematics, reported this year as the most challenging period of his life and that he has never cried so much. He then thanked his school and teachers for the support they rendered him during these difficult times.
